Hurricane Categories

Hurricanes are classified into five categories based on their wind speeds and the level of damage they can cause.

       Category One

Winds:  74 to 95 mph   Damage: Minor damage to trees and poorly built structures Storm Surge: 4' to 5' above normal tide levels

Category Two

Winds: 96 to 110 mph   Damage: Moderate damage to structures and trees may blow down Storm Surge: 6' to 8' above normal tide levels and evacuations may be required.

Category Three

Winds: 111 to 130 mph   Damage: Large trees down and structural damage to small buildings.   Storm Surge: 9' to 12' causing severe coastal flooding and damage to coastal structures .

Category Four

Winds: 131 to 155 mph   Damage: Extensive damage Storm Surge: 13' to 17', causing flooding up to 6 miles inland and major structural damage near the coast.necessary.

Category Five

Winds: Over 155 mph   Damage: Complete building failure and  severe damage to most structures.   Storm Surge: Greater than 18'. Massive evacuations are often required.
